The Journey Ahead

Hej och välkommen! (Hello and welcome!)
My name is Nikki Rogers and I am an aspiring teacher and current student at WKU! An exciting journey lies before me and I've decided to keep this blog as a record of my upcoming adventure!

Out of many applicants, I was chosen to be one of only two students to spend part of their student teaching semester in Sweden as part of WKU’s International Student Teaching Program. This is Western’s first time hosting a program in Sweden so it is very different than their other programs in England, Korea, Spain, Ecuador, and Germany. I am very proud to be the first WKU student to represent my country, my university, and my profession in Sweden.

This semester I will teach 4th and 5th grade at Folkungaskolan in Linköping, Sweden. My fiance, Max is also involved in the program. Max will be teaching high school English at Skäggetorspskolan. We will be there from April 10 to May 10.
Max and I have also planned weekend trips to Amsterdam and a town in the French Alps called Chamonix (sham-mo-nee). I have already booked all of our flights and Hostels.

While I am personally thrilled for the journey ahead, it is important to keep in mind that this adventure is not just for me, but for my students as well. I bought a stuffed elephant to take with me to Sweden and on my weekend trips. I will get pictures of him in all these great places and write little notes (from his perspective) about the places we visit. My plan is to hang these notes and pictures in my future classroom and keep the elephant there as a “class pet.” My students will be able to learn about new countries by reading about the adventures of their beloved class pet!

I told the cooperating teacher from my first placement that I’d like to be pen pals with her class while I am overseas. So I’ll be mailing them pictures and letters from my elephant!

I am so blessed for this once in a life time opportunity!
